Library Possibilities

A library is a place where wonders, curiosities, creativity and inspirations can flourish and be realized. Since the beginning, the learners, imaginers, thinkers and dreamers have found their way into the walls, and more recently, into the cyber realm of libraries to realize their potential. As schools strive to teach students to be future ready citizens, libraries are undergoing transformation towards a Learning Commons Model that will support 21st century learning.

La Biblio Beairsto is in the midst of its transformation from library to learning commons with the help and support of our schools PAC and School District Learning Grants. The hard work and ingenuity of our schools teacher librarian and the collaboration with a learning commons committee made up of teachers and administration, our new learning commons will be a center of change in our historic, 1909 brick landmark in the heart of the North Okanagan.

While holding true to its history and with French language and culture at the heart of these changes, La Biblio Beairsto realizing its potential. Although there are many possibilities in Beairsto’s future, the primary focus is to create a flexible learning space that will support all our learners, from K-7, and its teachers and staff. By adding wheels to the bookshelves, purchasing light and flexible furniture, the space will be able to change based on the needs of the users. In addition to making the space flexible, the colors and décor are being modernized and minimalized, in a way that will showcase our students learning and leave room for growth.

As the space gets a revamp, the teacher librarian is continuing her efforts to bring new technologies into the school. Although the library space is still not very tech friendly (lacking WiFi connection, odd projector placement that doesn’t work for instruction, no laptop hookups), through collaborative efforts, these technologies are making their way into classrooms. Already our school has Osmo and Sphero robotics, iPads and laptops, but we are moving to get document cameras and projectors in each classroom, set up a GreenScreen newsroom, ensure there is internet access throughout the building and make coding accessible with ProD for teachers.

The third step for our learning commons is to build a MakerSpace station that will allow for students to become the makers of their learning experiences. We have a proposed outdoor learning space that will serve as a construction, gardening and group meeting area, and are putting together a mobile Maker Cart that will have not only craft supplies but tools, different gadgets, and even simple cooking utensils.

The possibilities for transformation from library to learning commons is truly endless, and it is important to ensure that goals and planning is not only meaningful but realistic and accessible. By taking small steps, and doing each step right, I believe that La Biblio Beairsto will be able to serve our learning communities evolving and divers needs, and become a hub for culturally rich, French language learning.
